The first sounds that Cassandra Cain heard in her life were those of violence and death.
This would set the precident for the rest of her life.
Raised in isolation by her father, assassin David Cain, Cassandra was taught to read the language of her opponant's body rather than understand their actual words. Cain wanted to created the perfect living weapon. Cassandra was an unparalled success.
It went wrong the day Cain took young Cassandra on her first kill. The mission was a compleat success, but what she'd done scared the young girl. She ran, and spent the next several years drifting from place to place, coming to Gotham just before No Man's Land.
There, she acted as eyes and hands for the Oracle, former Bargirl Barbra Gordon, and eventually coming to the attention of the Batman. She became the new Batgirl after Batman forbade the Huntress from using the mantel.
Cassandra opperated under the watchful eye of both Barbra and Batman. An encounter with a well meaning telepath gave Cassandra the facility to actually understand the words being said to her, but temporarily cost her her skill at reading her opponant's body language.
It was Shiva Woosan (the woman who just might be Cassandra's mother) who helped her regain most of her old skills, under the condition that Cassandra fight her to the death one year later.
Cassandra won, but refused to kill Shiva. The two have encountered eachother several times since then.
Since then, Cassandra has gone on to form a brief relationship with Superboy, a friendship with Spoiler Stephenie Brown that lasted until the girl died, and has moved to Bludhaven, where she has taken an interest in her new neighborhood.
Cassandra remains one of the few non-metahumans who can really take Batman on in a fight, and tends to view him as a kind of father figure.
Character's Personality:
Cassandra tends to come off as rather reserved to those that don't really know her. She remains hesistant to talk, despite her reletivly newfound ability to do so. She's rather socially awkward thanks to her isolated upbringing. She often feels the need to try and fit in, but doesn't really know how.

It wasn't about moving silently. Years of human evolution had taught mankind to be very wary of things that were too silent. So being too quiet could attract attention if she wasn't careful. What it was really about was being like the air. You didn't notice air unless it wasn't there.
Cassandra was like the air in the night, moving over the rooftops like a cool breeze, with not so much as a flutter of her cape to mark her passing.
